Campout

We had a pretty successful backyard camp out last night. It was a nice cool day and perfect for a fire and sleeping in a toasty sleeping bag. We started with a camp fire around 5:30 and enjoyed sitting by it for a while. Dinner consisted of hot dogs roasted over the open flames (veggie dogs for some of us). The kids enjoyed spending lots of time hanging out in the tent, reading (in my sleeping bag) for Colin and just being five-year olds for Julia and Caroline.

There was also some sitting, relaxing, and playing mancala by the fire. And since no camping trip is complete without s'mores, we of course did that too. After s'mores we were waiting for it to get dark enough to sleep. The kids passed a lot of that time catching lightening bugs. They made a little habitat for about 10 lucky bugs to hang out in, but they were not harmed and set free before bedtime. They caught many more than that, but we didn't want to overcrowd our jar.

Finally around 9:30 it seemed to be getting dark. We headed in to put on some warm jammies, brush teeth, and go to the bathroom one last time. Then we sat out for a few more minutes looking at the stars before crawling into our sleeping bags. The sleeping went pretty well, Colin woke up chilly around 2:30. So I grabbed a few extra blankets from inside, put Julia back on her air mattress, and covered everyone up with some extra warmth. Colin woke again around 4:00 and said he couldn't sleep, but quickly fell back asleep until the sun was up.

Julia was the first one awake (after me, I snapped this picture while it was still quiet in the morning). She was up around 6:45 and the two of us left the tent a little after 7:00. Colin followed us around 7:30. And Caroline was still sleeping at 7:50 when I woke her up because we had to get ready for Colin's dentist appointment.

All in all it was fun. The camping out part (fire, s'mores, staying up late) was more fun than the sleeping. All four of us are a little sleepy today, but it is fun to do maybe once a summer. Some of us are sleepier than others.

  1. Sounds like everybody had a good time. Glad the weather cooperated. Tonight might be an early night for everyone.
